Nesbit Optimistic for Balanced, Responsible 2018-19 Budget
HARRISBURG – Looking ahead to a more positive year, Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer/Butler) said today that he is optimistic that the process to enact the 2018-19 state budget will be far smoother and less contentious as in prior years.

“After several years of difficult budgets, I believe that the governor set a more positive tone with his budget address today,” said Nesbit. “When we vote on a final budget package, we still need to make sure we control spending, that the budget is balanced using the revenue we’re already taking in, and is responsible to our taxpayers.”

The $33 billion budget proposal is about $1 billion more than the current year, with an additional investment sought for public education and public safety. Much of that would be funded by a severance tax on Marcellus Shale and a per-person fee for state police coverage.

“I still disagree with the governor on two of his key goals – a tax on Marcellus Shale and a fee for police protection on rural municipalities -- but I believe that by working together and finding common ground, we can have a far better budget process,” Nesbit added.

The lawmaker outlined four major principles in which he and his colleagues will be using to advance fiscal policy in the coming months: developing work and economic opportunities, educating for success, escaping government dysfunction, and protecting families and communities.
